Almost a million tons of chrome slag processed by Aksu Ferroalloy Plant for the last year

According to the results of 2019, at the branch of JSC Kazchrome TNC more than 960 thousand tons of chrome slag were processed at the enterprise and re-involved in the production of more than 24 thousand tons of dust trapped by powerful gas cleaning units on furnaces.

Environmental issues are deeper integrated into the production tasks of the giant of domestic metallurgy. The introduction of new environmentally friendly technologies is next to numerous measures to neutralize the consequences of production activities. The leading role in this direction at the Aksu ferroalloy plant is given to slag processing - the main waste of ferroalloy production. In anticipation of the entering into force of the new Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2021, which provides for higher requirements for waste management, this issue is becoming increasingly relevant.

- "Due to repeated involvement in production, the current slag is practically not stored on dumps," notes the director of the enterprise Sergey Prokopyev. - Moreover, we gradually recycle stale waste that has accumulated over the history of the plant. As a result, we get commodity ferrochrome suitable for shipment to the consumer, foundry ferrochrome and metal concentrate, which are re-involved in production and road stone.

Dust is re-involved in the production, which is formed in the furnaces and trapped by gas cleaning units. It contains up to 30% of the leading element and is an excellent raw material for the sintering shop of the plant. Almost 250 thousand tons of sinter were produced from waste material in 2019, which is returned to the furnace. In order to achieve such volumes, the sintering shop processes dust not only from the Aksu, but also from the Aktyubinsk ferroalloy plant, another structural unit of JSC Kazchrome TNC.

At the end of 2019, the enterprise allocated almost 8 billion tenge to implement environmental programs. Among the key projects is the start of the construction of a new gas-cleaning complex for furnace No. 44, which is scheduled to be launched this year, and the replacement of filters on existing gas cleaning systems.
