Wastes Recycling Project is Under Implementation at the DGOK

The Donskoy GOK in Khromtau develops a Beneficiation Plant for sludge processing, which will be the most advanced in terms of technology and automation in the world. The plant is expected to be commissioned in 2022.

The unique project, provisionally titled Shlamy-2, is designed to solve two major issues - to recycle production wastes and to maintain the plant's raw material base. The feedstock for the new plant will be sludge stockpiled at DGOK since 1973, which contains from 18 to 34% chrome oxide. So far the existing technologies at the plant do not allow efficient processing of these wastes, as they are of a very fine (as they say, "thin") class. With the new plant's commissioning, it is planned to process about two million tons of waste per year and receive up to 500,000 tons of additional commercial product - concentrate of the three classes. Moreover, it is expected to create up to 400 additional jobs.

- This project is very important for our company, it is another step towards mitigating the environmental impact of our assets," said Arman Yessenzhulov, President of JSC "TNC "Kazchrome", "We have developed and approved a comprehensive program for the recycling of the current and constantly generated wastes, which will significantly reduce the volume of previously stockpiled production wastes, and also allow us to recycle the constantly generated wastes from existing production facilities. The program implementation will result in an additional commercial products, thus increasing tax and social contributions to the district and regional budgets.

The beneficiation process at the new plant will be a unique flotation process. It is innovative as it has not been ever used in the world to extract chromium oxide from this type of raw material. The Shlamy-2 project is based on successful tests and the experience of industry-leading companies.

Currently, the main building of Crushing and Beneficiation Plant No. 1 is being reconstructed, where the main equipment will be installed. Meanwhile, it is supplied by the leading manufacturers from Europe, Turkey and the USA, such as Thyssenkrupp Industrial, Metso Outotec etc.

- The automation level of this Plant shall be very high, - said Ivan Lyssenko ERG Capital Projects – Strategic Projects Chief Engineer. - We are confident that it will be the most advanced Beneficiation Plant in the world by the time it is commissioned.
