The Bolashak Mine, Donskoy GOK, started transitioning to Sublevel Caving (SLC).

This is one of the most advanced underground ore mining methods used in deep mines worldwide. The project is being implemented at the Almaz-Zhemchuzhina deposit.

SLC is an underground mining method involving the division of the ore body into horizontal layers (sublevels), thus improving control over rock caving. After the ore is extracted, the voids are gradually filled with caved rock, ensuring safe operation at great depths.

The key advantage of the new system is its high degree of process mechanization and automation. To achieve this, modern equipment was procured and partially put into operation. It takes on the main burden of sinking and mining, significantly easing the work of personnel.

The transition to SLC was a response to the increasing depth of mining operations and complication of mining and geological conditions. Previously, the gravity scraping system GSC was used in certain areas.

“As mining operations increase in depth, the requirements for mining safety, sustainability, and efficiency become significantly higher. This new technology will enable us to ensure long-term and stable operation of the mine, increase productivity, and create more modern and safe working conditions for our employees”, notes Sergey Prokopyev, CEO of JSC TNC Kazchrome.

Preparations for the SLC implementation took several years and included geomechanical surveys, design of new areas, infrastructure upgrades, procurement of specialized equipment, and personnel training.

“The implementation of SLC requires a restructuring of the entire underground mining system”, says Yerlan Mashanov, Project Manager. "The layouts for level development, ore transportation, ventilation, and production planning are being changed. Modern high-performance equipment and automated solutions are being implemented at the mine, improving efficiency and reducing personnel workload.

The technology is expected to reduce ore losses, stabilize production volumes, and bring previously inaccessible areas of the deposit into development. The implementation of SLC will be a significant milestone in the development of underground mining at Donskoy GOK, aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
